Memorial Day Weekend!

Our Memorial Day weekend was full of yard sales (EVERY DAY for three days straight)... so I didn't get many pictures.  The kids were in and out of the house, helping with the sale here and there.  Playing in the backyard and riding bikes to and from friends houses.

Here are the two pictures I managed to snap on Memorial Day...

Sights of Summer

We had some friends over for a Memorial Day cookout and the kids had such a blast.  The sights of summer have officially arrived at our home.

I wish I had taken more pictures but between being the mom, and the hostess, and making sure the food was read, these were the ones I took:

Preparing for Company

I'm going to have to write these "small glimpse into our life" posts more often because it allows me to share quick, short, mini-stories from our day to day life that I want to remember but don't always, in and of themselves, warrant a full-blown lengthy blog post.

On that note... more glimpses from our life as I prepared for company yesterday.

We are hosting a Memorial Day Cookout today with just a few families, all of whom have young children the same age of our kids.

So, I figured I would throw together an easy but delicious fruit salad... well, note to self.  The easy fruit salad takes about four times as long once you remember that you're cooking for families with toddlers, and toddlers need apple and pineapple pieces cut to a much smaller "bite size" than adults do.

Whenever I cook or bake something while the kids are awake, I've always sort of adopted the philosophy, "I am trying to be productive in the kitchen... so I surrender the rest of the main floor to the forces of my children."  It's not a perfect science, but it usually results in my cooking or baking a relatively successful dish that is not burnt beyond edibility.  Well, after spending about an hour (on and off) in the kitchen creating toddler-bite-sized fruit salad I surveyed the rest of the main floor... my kitchen philosophy does not work so well when we're having company the next day.  The fruit salad might be ready for company, but the rest of the floor looked like a tornado swept through.  I need a new system when I'm cooking for company.

Lastly, in an effort to recover some damage to the family room, I said to the kids,
"If we can get this room picked up a little, we can have some time in the bounce house before bath time."
(Because the rule is that the bounce house cannot be inflated until all toys are put away and the floor is picked up.)
Tracey did not miss a beat and replied, "I'll sit right here and watch you guys."
Ummmm... excuse me?

Those were funny parts of our yesterday.

Happy happy Memorial Day to you, and please take some time today to remember those who have sacrificed so much to keep our country free for so many generations.

Just as I type that, I am so humbled to look back up on this post and realize how much freedom was wrapped into our yesterday.  I cannot even list every freedom we enjoyed yesterday from the activities we chose to do, to what we wore, to the fact we attended church, to the fact we live in our own home that we chose to buy, to the fact that my children played while I prepared for friends to come over tomorrow, to the fact that we're expecting our fourth child, to the fact that my husband was working all day in a job that he chose to take that he enjoys doing, to the fact that I make the rules in my house with my children, to that fact that my three year old was free to jump in with her opinion about cleaning... and I was free to correct her on who all was going to help clean the living room.

Trying to understand and quantify freedom to an American-born citizen is like trying to describe water to a fish.

From Our Windows

I'm not exactly sure how much sound travels out of our bedroom windows.  Now that the weather is getting warmer, we keep our windows cracked or open during the night, and sometimes during the day.  Sometimes our room is loud with crying babies -- usually in the minutes right before they are fed -- and sometimes at 4:00am.  I'm not sure if sounds of crying come from our windows.

In addition to the occasional cries, currently, Tracey has developed a very loud laugh.  When there is something she finds hilarious... she laughs very loudly and for a long time.  I'm not sure if sounds of laughter come from our windows.

Sometimes... some beautiful times, our whole family plays on our big bed.  The babies are cooing and giggling, and Tracey is climbing and jumping and laughing, and Hubby and I are just trying to keep up with the fun.  There is singing and laughing and the same games over and over and over again.  There is a little monkey named Tracey jumping on the bed or an acrobat named Tracey climbing and falling.  There are three little babies when Tracey decides she is a baby too.  There are pillow fights and tickling and big giant hugs, and sweet kisses and Bible stories.  I'm not sure if sounds of joy come from our windows.

All of these sounds are free to come through our windows because servicemen for generations have given their lives to keep America free.  Hubby and I were free to leave our hometowns, pursue educations in the fields of our choosing, take jobs wherever we chose, fall in love with one another, marry each other when and in the place of our choosing... with a huge celebration surrounded by our family and friends.  Then we were free to settle wherever we wanted, begin a family when we desired to do so, raise as many children as the Lord blesses us with, and buy our own home.  And sounds probably travel out our bedroom windows - sounds of crying, sounds of laughter, and sounds of silly joy.

It seems so wrong that on a weekend that we remember the heroes who have given their lives protecting our freedoms, and remember the families they left behind, that my family plays and laughs and giggles together... and then I remember that those who died did so that many families, including mine, and for generations previous and future can play and laugh and giggle together in freedom.

Happy Memorial Day.

Salt Lake City Weekend

We had a great weekend in Salt Lake City.  We went to see my friend from college, Mary Carol, who was in town working on her Stanford post-doc project.  Tracey Ann and I got to see her a few months ago when she came to Denver, but Hubby didn't get to come, and the Denver trip was SO quick -- 3.5 hours there, 3.5 hour visit, and 3.5 hours home.

Salt Lake City was so much better because we got to meet her for dinner, then I got to spend some 1 on 1 time with her while Hubby watched Tracey Ann, and then we got to see her again the next day for a late breakfast/early lunch.

The only downside to the trip was that Tracey Ann was sick when we arrived, and then I was sick by the time we left.  Tracey Ann had been battling a cough, but she was staying pretty constant -- not getting better, not getting worse.  Then, she spiked a fever our first night there, but then, the good news is, she just got better thereafter.  Our second day there, I could tell I was coming down with her virus, and I have gotten sicker ever since.

Below are some pictures of our time there, and don't forget to read about our great experience with families and children at Chic-Fil-A.

Lexie got to come with us this trip -- Lloyd stayed with the dog-sitter.

Fun in the hotel room.

Her favorite thing to do was climbing up on and standing on our cooler.

"Can I take pictures with your phone, Mama?"

On the cooler again.

I love this outfit.

I think this is the closest we've gotten to a picture of all of us smiling and looking at the camera.

Tracey Ann made a new friend at the restaurant... here she's waving at them.

Finally, here's a smile, because I'm tickling her -- and my wide-mouth laugh.

She LOVED riding on the cart

She had so much fun in the Chic-Fil-A tube slide

Bye-bye Dr. Mazza

What a cutie

A little Memorial Day gardening once we got home

I love this Memorial Day dress

To Some...

To some, every day is Memorial Day.

We are so incredibly grateful for the sacrifice of generations of men and women who have served this nation, in uniform, and for the families they left behind while serving.
