One Month...

One Month from today will be a big day...

One month from today will be the culmination of something I began working on last January... something that literally started with one door being closed in my face and God opening a window for this idea.

This idea started in my head and has been my baby throughout the process.  I have one other teacher assisting me... but this is event is the culmination of my hard work and investment.

Here are the details:

I have a new student this year in 6th grade at a local middle school who is blind due to a brain tumor she has been fighting since she was 3 years old.  She is such an inspiration.

Working with this student was my first exposure to the challenges of someone living with a brain tumor and from our working together this year came this idea for a Brain Tumor Awareness Event for our community.  We want my student to know there are other people in the valley suffering from brain tumors, and no one is alone in their fight.

We are partnering with some local schools creating a Brain Tumor Awareness Week during the week leading up to the race to really increase awareness in this area, especially with this studen's peers.

The event is a 1K Emoji Fun Run on Saturday May 11 at 10:00am in Silt.  We are partnering with the Silt Police Department and their annual Bike Safety Rodeo.  The race starts at one Park and ends at another Park where the Silt PD Bike Rodeo will be happening at the same time.  "Come for the Race!  Stay for the Rodeo!"

Race participants are encouraged to dress to support someone fighting a brain tumor... or dress like an emoji!

If participants register before April 18, they are guaranteed a race t-shirt.

We are hoping for a great family and youth turnout, so youth prices are available for kids ages 5-18.

All the proceeds go to the National Brain Tumor Society.

We have received monetary and in-kind donations from organizations up and down the valley and we have been thrilled by the community response thus far.

The race registration is available here:

Stay Tuned

I have something really big in the works that involves this picture...

So for now, I'm just going to say,

"Stay Tuned!"

County Fair Parade

This past week the Garfield County Fair took place, and we really did not participate at all.  They had 4-H competitions, rodeos, concerts, bake-offs and more but we just have so much going on this time of year especially with Hubby's home stretch of graduate school.

The one thing we did make time for, and had an absolute blast was the County Fair Parade.

We have been to the Homecoming parade in the past and it is fun, but small.  But based on my experience with the Homecoming parades, I had very low expectations for this Fair Parade -- but it was AWESOME!

Tracey was at the perfect age to be entertained by the parade and have a blast, and the twins were at the perfect age to eagerly observe everything from the stroller.  By the end of the parade, both babies had fallen asleep and Tracey was walking up to strangers asking for Candy Please -- because so many people had handed out candy during the parade.

Here were some pictures I snapped of our fun:

Adulthood

There are some events that catch me by surprise, when I realize, in no uncertain terms, I have entered adulthood.
I often hear older people make comments like, "I don't feel 60/75/90 (enter age here)"... I always figured those feelings came with age.  I feel 28... but I certainly don't feel like an adult.  Is that what these people are talking about when they say they don't feel their age?  Maybe this is what adulthood feels like -- fun?

I know I'm an adult, and for years I took great pride every month writing my month checks from my own hard-earned paycheck for rent, credit card, tithe, etc.  Now we have an automatic check sent from the bank... but for years paying those bills and writing those checks made me feel so grown up and responsible.  Like I was a kid, but I was remembering to complete my monthly adult responsibility.  That being said, there were still days I enjoyed staying in my pjs as long as possible and consciously deciding that the dishes in the sink could wait til morning... those choices don't seem like choices an adult would make.

Last night, Chris and I went to a city meeting regarding a new water plant they want to build in our city.  On the way home, I was astounded at the adult I've become.

I have been to City Council meetings before -- I remember going as young as age 6 or 7 because my parents didn't want me to stay home with a sitter, and so I went along to the meetings.  I remember attending the meetings in high school because by doing so I received extra credit in government class.  I remember not understanding what was going on -- maybe I'd understand an issue or two, but on the whole, I was clueless.

It is because I had attended city meetings as a child and adolescent that I noticed the amazing contrast between those meetings and the one I attended last night.  Last night... attending this meeting as an adult, I was interested in everything that was said -- from the presentation, to the discussion, to the questions, I was fulling invested in the topic, I paid attention for the entire 2+ hour event, I asked a few questions myself, and I understood everything that was said.  Those things certainly never happened when I attended meetings in as a child and adolescent.

I really am an adult.  There is no denying it.
Well, there may be no denying it, but I can still treasure the joy of stopping for an ice cream cone with my hubby on the way home from the meeting, and laughing because the scoop of ice cream fell off of the cone and smeared all over my shirt.  That would never happen to an adult.

There's adulthood -- caring about taxes and community issues...

Then there's adulthood -- a homemade veggie dinner that you don't spill on your shirt...

Well, I've achieved one level of adulthood.  I plan on postponing that second part for as long as possible.
