The Shift

Over this past Thanksgiving week, I experienced a shift in my reality as a mother... it was big.

When I became a mother everything changed for me because I had waited MY WHOLE LIFE to be a mother -- and I did not stop at one child.  Hubby and I had 6 children in just over 7 years... and I have absolutely loved it.

That said, I have worked very hard these past 7 years at keep children alive, happy, loved, fed, clothed, relatively clean AND tried to make every birthday, and holiday special, memorable, and full of loving family traditions.  It's been a lot.

I would not trade any of it for the world, but, frankly, it is enough to sometimes make me wish we wouldn't celebrate Holidays or Birthdays because of all the extra work involved for me.

But this Thanksgiving, there was almost a complete shift.

It began when Tracey and Lee Lee started the first day of Thanksgiving break by waking up bright-eyed and bushy tailed at 5:15am.  I think Tracey was hoping that she could welcome the start of a week off school with early morning time on the ipad... THAT WAS NOT HAPPENING!

So, I put both girls to work stuffing Christmas cards... and much to my surprise, they happily set to work, and stuffed 250 cards in envelopes for me before anyone else was up.

Whenever my mom and dad visit, my dad ALWASY asks me what he can do to help.  Every day, usually every hour he offers to help in any way possible.  A few days later, I took my Dad up on his offer and asked him to fold all of our Christmas letters.  He happily set to work -- for hours accomplishing that task.

Not long into his project Tracey, Caroline, and Lee Lee recognized this as a part of the Christmas card project, and they began adding the Christmas letters to the envelopes that already had Christmas cards.

The next day, Tracey was repeatedly asking if she could add the address labels and the stamps to the Christmas cards.  I soon set her to work.

The kids became so invested in the process of sending out 250 Christmas Cards to family and friends, that they soon began coloring pictures to put in the envelopes of their friends so that their friends had something special to open when the parents opened the card from us.

I have had to exert almost zero effort in the process of sending out Christmas cards this year.

When we were decorating the tree, Tracey begged to be in charge of hanging the lights this year, and so we worked together on them -- it was the first year I had help hanging the lights and it went SO smoothly.  She was a HUGE help!

I unpacked the ornaments, but our four big kids decorated nearly the entire tree by themselves.  I was there reminding them how breakable some ornaments are, and telling them where certain ornaments are from and why they are special... but they decorated the entire tree.

We have six children and that is a lot of work... but we have six children who are growing up in a home where we need their help, and we expect their help.  This was the first Holiday that I felt the help of so many joyful little helpers.  They really did lighten my load, and we participated in traditions together, and we had such a wonderful time as a result.

Six children are still a lot of work... but something has shifted, and in the blink of an eye, I am going to have more helpers in the kitchen and around the tree than can fit, and they are going to be doing the entire thing themselves and cooking better than I ever will.

I will forever have six children, but they will not remain children... before I know it, I will have six adults, and the many hands will make light work.

Bigger House

We might need a bigger house to accommodate this year's Christmas tree...

Perfect Timing

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas...

Hubby and his dad worked hard on getting these lights hung, and we could literally see the cloud of snow getting closer and closer as they worked.  Within two hours of their finishing the job, the snow began to fall.

Favorite Ornaments 2018

I love putting up a tree every Christmas.  I love the ornaments that I pull out of storage and hang withe care recalling from whom, when, or where they originated.

I have old and new ornaments, clothe ornaments, glass ornaments, very fragile ornaments, character ornaments, sentimental ornaments, Lenox ornaments, plastic ornaments, gold-ish ornaments, musical ornaments...and more.  I have many ornaments from over the years.

This year, I am finding a few new kinds of ornaments on my tree than ever before... and they are my new favorites.

Now that I have children in school, I have homemade ornaments from my children and I absolutely love them!

These are my favorite ornaments of 2018:

A snowman in a snow globe by Caroline

A manger scene made last year by Tracey

A sparkly ornament by Howard

A beautiful snowflake by Tracey

Vacation

I snapped a pictures over the week of Thanksgiving vacation that I feel like perfectly encapsulates my vacation...

In this picture, you see frivolous Christmas lights up in my family room, which makes me smile so much.  You also see several baskets of clean laundry just waiting to be folded.  This was my vacation.

My work never stops -- all of them.  The demands of my teaching job never stops.  The demands of my college teaching job never stops.  I now have a children's ministry job, which never stops.  And the demands of homemaking, motherhood job absolutely never stops.

Except when I just stop.

Over this Thanksgiving break, I actually took a vacation from pretty much all of it.

I took time off from most of my jobs.  I also gave myself a break with my regular motherhood chores, and instead I took some time to do the seasonal jobs that I LOVE!  I LOVE decorating my home.  (I also love Hallmark Christmas movies... which is playing on the television under the lighted moose.)  Decorating is not work to me... but it can be stressful if I let my regular jobs take priority over my Christmas jobs and Christmas joy.

You know what?  The clean laundry stayed in those baskets in our family room for about 48 hours... but it eventually was folded and made its way to everyone's drawers.  And I was so much happier while folding it in the light of these Christmas lights.

Home Decor

I've been updating some pictures in frames in our home trying to incorporate some new favorite pictures with Addallee.  It has been really fun to see that, without even trying I'm starting to see parallel pictures from different seasons of our lives and different ages of our children.

My favorite home decor is pictures of our family.

A friend came over once and complimented all the family pictures I have on our walls.  She then told me that she had read a magazine article in some Home and Country or Martha Steward magazine that said you are not supposed to decorate your home primarily with photos, but she said how much she liked my home with all the pictures.  The almost back-handed compliment made me laugh, and I thought about it long after she left.

The truth is I absolutely love our home -- it was such an unexpected blessing from God for Hubby and me to be able to purchase this amazing home for our growing family.  I love being the home-maker of our family.  I am not a painter, and I certainly am not going to spend our money on expensive room renovations or window treatments.  I love that our furniture is hand-me-down because my children can play on the furniture and enjoy our furniture without my stressing about wear and tear, or accidental spills.

Also, my husband is the love of my life and our marriage is one of the best commitments I've ever made and continue to make every day.  Our four children are my dreams come true and I want to see pictures of them, and my husband -- of this dream that I built, these blessings that God has given me, around every corner and on every wall of our home.

I am the one who has to live here, and I love seeing my walls covered with pictures of our family.  Martha Stewart has yet to invite herself over to my home for dinner... and if she ever were to do so, hopefully the warmth and the joy of our happy family and smiling children would help her overlook the fact my walls are covered with photos.  Well, photos, and children's paintings, and fingerprints -- see my walls have variety.

Back to the intention of this post -- the juxtaposition of different pictures:

December 1

The journey of decking the halls of our new home begins with a single step... or a single mantle.

Welcome to the Christmas season:

Sights of the Season I

This month, in an effort to keep myself focused on the joy of the Christmas season every day, I have been posting 25 days of instagram, sort of an Advent Calendar of sorts.

Do you remember Advent Calendars?  I guess they were the old fashion version of Elf on the Shelf.  My understanding is that the Elf hangs out at your house to keep an eye on the kiddos and report back to Santa in the days leading up to Christmas.

When I was a kid, there was no elf -- there were 25 pieces of candy, 25 Bible verses, and 25 ornaments to put on a tree -- one each day leading up to Christmas.

Well, I've been posting one picture a day each day of December leading up to Christmas.

Here are some that I posted -- days 1-5:
