Three Girls

When my mom was a little girl, she planned on growing up to have three girls.
She was going to name them Stacey, Stephanie, and Sarah.
Life had its twists and turns, and not unlike many adults, my mom's childhood plans did not play out exactly like her six-year-old self planned.

She married my dad and they agreed to have one child... and I arrived on the scene.  She always said that if I had been a boy, she would have gone back to the negotiation table for a second baby.  But I was a girl, and so my mom was very happy to raise her one baby girl.

Her dream of a baby girl came true... not three girls, but one.

Knowing my mother's history and dream for three girls put a lump in my throat when I snapped this picture at Tracey, Howard, and Caroline's Mother's Day Tea.  Grammie with three girls -- my three girls, and her three granddaughters.

It didn't happen in motherhood, but in His timing, God gave her the three girls she's always wanted in grandmotherhood... and added a little Howard as a bonus.

Happy Mother's Day!

The Cure Is Motherhood

I have had headaches since middle school -- similar to the ones my mom had from time to time.

When I was in college, my mom learned that she was suffering from migraines at which point I realized that, since I had the same kind of headaches, I was having migraines too.

My migraines were never debilitating -- they are rough, some are worse than others, a dark silent room is always my best friend, but I have never had blurred vision or crippling nausea.  I always just dealt with them.

Throughout college and graduate school I would have occasional migraines.  My parents always told me that I should keep track of them in case there was a pattern, or certain triggers.  I never kept close track of them... but I figured out that alcohol, caffeine, stress, and lack of sleep could be triggers, if I wasn't careful.

Once Chris and I were married, the migraines became much more frequent -- several a month instead of once every few months, and I couldn't pair them with caffeine, alcohol, stress, or lack of sleep.  Why was marriage causing such horrible headaches?

It took a few years, but, in time, I realized that the migraines were related to my birth control pills.  My migraines became predictable and miserable -- every 3 weeks, for 3 days at a time like clockwork (with an occasional additional migraine thrown in there due to other factors).

Once Chris and I realized the cause, we prayed about what to do, and felt led that I would go off of "the pill."  For as many women feel that it is the greatest thing on earth -- sexual relations without pregnancy, we realized first-hand how unnatural it is to mess with a women's hormones, and "the pill" is certainly not without side affects or consequences.

Immediately after stopping "the pill", my migraines decreased.  Suddenly, even the headaches I had when triggered by caffeine or alcohol were less intense and lasted a shorter amount of time.

In time, I became pregnant and discontinued my consumption of alcohol, and significantly decreased my consumption of caffeine.  The migraines all put disappeared.

It is sad that it took becoming pregnant for me to cut out alcohol and caffeine, especially when I knew they could be migraine triggers, but, for me, that is what it took.

So, for me, the cure to migraines is motherhood  --
step 1: go off birth control
step 2: cut out alcohol and caffeine due to pregnancy and nursing

Now the headaches are all but gone.

I went from 1-2 headaches a month, each of which lasted 3 full days to 3-4 headaches a year, each of which lasts 36 hours maximum.  I still have to be careful when I am stressed, over-tired, or strain my neck and arm muscles, but we are Praising God, and loving life without consistent and miserable headaches.

For me, the cure is motherhood.

Gratitude: Day 11

As I am writing this post today, I am not feeling very grateful.  I am telling myself how fortunate I am for so many things in my life -- including this summer of working like a dog following immediately by the school year of back-to-the-grind.  I am listing my blessings for myself to try to buck myself up and increase my level of gratitude, but today, it is not working.

Today, I am grateful that I can come to my Lord when I am not grateful.  I am grateful that I am cast all my cares onto the Lord, and He does not judge me for my momentarily (or sometimes longer) lack of gratitude.  I am grateful that I have nothing to hide from my Comforter and Keeper, because He knows every word that is on my tongue before it gets there.

Today, I am so grateful for my Savior, my Brother, my Friend, my Deliverer, my Rock, my Comforter, my Defender, my Almighty God, my Everlasting Father.

As I am typing that, I am reminded of a song, that I love, and haven't sung at church in such a long time.  It's call and response between men and women, which I LOVE, You Are Holy (Prince of Peace) by Michael W. Smith.

During the refrain, the woman sing the following... such beautiful words, and an even better sentiment:

You are Lord of Lords, You are King of Kings,
You are Mighty God, Lord of Everything,
You're Emmanuel, You're the Great I AM,
You're the Prince of Peace who is the Lamb,
You're the Living God, You're my Saving Grace,
You will reign forever, You are Ancient of Days,
You are Alpha, Omega, Beginning and End,
You're my Savior, Messiah,
Redeemer and Friend,
You're my Prince of Peace, and I will live my life for you.

That is what I am grateful for today.

10 days down; 10 to go!

A Christmas Carol

I have many favorite Christmas movies and Christmas shows that put me in the holiday spirit each year.  Everything from The Nativity Story, to It's a Wonderful Life, to Frosty the Snowman, to A Charlie Brown Christmas, to White Christmas, to While You Were Sleeping, to Miracle on 34th Street and many more play in my home in the days and weeks leading up to Christmas.

via
A Christmas Carol -- any version -- has never become a tradition in my Holiday movie enjoyment... but the story of A Christmas Carol remains as dear to my heart as the story of the nativity itself.

I do not watch A Christmas Carol every year, or read the book annually (although I did listen to the audio book this year and enjoyed it immensely), but whenever I come upon A Christmas Carol, or deliberately read or watch the story, I am transported to memory as clear to me as this morning, and as important to my life as the Easter story.

When I was a little girl -- around age nine or ten, I was back in my parents' bedroom watching television while my parents hosted a dinner party.  It was late January or February, which I remember because, when I came upon A Christmas Carol on television, I was surprised given that Christmas was over a month past.

I kept watching A Christmas Carol, a story I knew well, and enjoyed it very much.  I thought I was simply enjoying a television show, but I didn't know the upcoming realization that would change my life.

With the Ghost of Christmas Future, when Mr. Scrooge timidly and fearfully walks to the headstone and discovers his own name, in this production of A Christmas Carol, Mr. Scrooge didn't simply pledge to honor Christmas in his heart keep it all year, in this production, he sought forgiveness from the Lord and asked Jesus into his heart.

via
At this point in the production, the stage went dark and a minister came on the screen and did an alter call for those who also wanted to invite Jesus into their hearts.

I had asked Jesus into my heart years before, and went to church several times a week; however, during this production, I KNEW, I understood, for the first time that Jesus died for ME.

I will never forget that moment -- a revelation like I had never experienced.

I actually went out to the kitchen in my pajamas, with tears streaming down my face and interrupted my mom from her dinner party because I had to tell her that Jesus died for ME.  I told her, "I've always known he did... but Mom, he died for ME!"

Not every version of A Christmas Carol includes Mr. Scrooge inviting Jesus into his life, but for me, every version reminds me of that beautiful night when the Lord used that one version of A Christmas Carol to reveal, in my heart, His love for ME.

Praises From Across the Globe!

What a joy it is going to be to write this post, and I hope you are equally blessed by reading it.  This week I have heard from friends about Praises and Answered Prayers from across the globe!

via
Chris and I are friends with two different families who have been in the process of adopting.  The families have walked very different journeys and do not know each other and BOTH announced within 24 hours of each other that they have been matched (accepted a referral -- I don't know the appropriate adoption lingo) with a daughter!  In fact, I read both of these good-news blog posts within hours of each other and I told Chris about the first family... then a few hours later, I told him about the other family, and he said, "Sweetie, you told me about this already."  I had to explain that No, really, these are two different families, two different baby girls and both have life-changing, prayers-answered news!

James and Liz's blog

James and Liz are friends of mine I made during my years at Vanderbilt, although Liz and I both attended Washington and Lee University and Vanderbilt University -- but we never overlapped in our schooling.  I have actually only met Liz and James once, but as many of you know, when you connect with a sister-in-Christ, you are connected forever.  James and Liz have two little girls (Anne and Molly) and are now welcoming a 10-month old baby from China into their family, Bethany Kate (to be called Kate).  James wrote an awesome post on their blog to announce their new family addition and it was wonderfully moving to read a husband and father's journey on this road to adoption.  I have read many women's accounts of the adoption journey, but this was the first father's account.

Praise God for this little miracle who has been matched with her family!  Please continue to keep James, Liz, Anne, Molly, and Kate in your prayers during these 6 months before Kate will come home.  To read more about this adoption journey, please visit James and Liz's blog.

John and Lauren's Blog

John and Lauren are friends I made during my Sr. year at Washington and Lee University.  They were newly-weds and Lauren had just graduated from college herself.  Lauren and I have stayed in touch ever since and prayed each other through many trials over these 6 years.  John and Lauren have a little boy, Mareto, and are now welcoming a 3-week old baby girl from Ethiopia into their family. From Lauren's blog posts, I have the impression that being matched with this baby girl happened a little more suddenly than they expected and they are over-joyed, but also praying like crazy to complete paper-work and gather finances to expedite all the steps that remain.

Baby Girl

Praise God for this miracle who has been matched with her family!  Please pray for John, Lauren, Mareto, and this beautiful baby girl as this family goes through the final, but very difficult phase of adoption where they have seen their baby but can't quite have her yet.  Please also pray that God would provide (quickly) all the funds needed, and if you feel led, please consider donating to John and Lauren's adoption.

All this joy, and yet, I'm not done yet...

My friend and old roommate, Maggie just arrived in Tanzania for a summer missions trip.  She is traveling with another woman from her church, Peggy, and they are sharing updates on a blog while they are over there.  So far, they have arrived safely, begun to settle in, met the kiddos, and begun teaching classes.  They are also getting used to, as they say, expending 100% more effort for daily chores like cooking, cleaning and sewing.

Please keep Maggie and Peggy in your prayers, and feel free to keep tabs on their journey for yourself by reading their blog.

What are some praises from your part of the globe?
