Brady's Birth Story Part 3

This post will be continuing on with Brady's birth story.  You can read Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

So we all headed to bed Sunday night with my parents in Vail, the kids and Hubby ready for school the next day, and my labor completely stopped.

That Monday, May 17, I was already on my maternity leave, so I did not need to teach or work, and I really felt like I had one thing on my to-do list — go into labor. My due date was Wednesday, and I was ready!

Tracey had a field day coming up on Thursday of that week that I wanted to attend, and we were less than one month away from our travel plans to Washington state to see my brother. I wanted to have this baby ASAP in order to begin the postpartum process to prepare for that trip.  Maybe these were not things that should have been on my mind at the end of my pregnancy, but they were.

With Tracey Ann, my maternity leave was spent almost entirely at home, getting to know my new baby, learning how to nurse, and adjusting to the new demands of motherhood. Now, expecting number six, I knew firsthand that life was going to go on, like normal (at a fast pace), with the newborn at home. My "maternity leave" for this baby, was only from my job not teaching over the summer months, and my large family still needed as much as I could give them while recovering and supporting my new baby. There is no "maternity leave" from mothering my older five children (ages 7, 5, 5, 3, and 1).

That said, on that Monday, two days prior t my due date, I was hesitant to fully try all ways of inducing labor because my parents were still in Vail. So, by Monday afternoon, I asked my parents to return to Rifle because we were now nearly one day away from my due date, and I wanted to be able to try various home remedies to try to encourage labor knowing they were in-house and ready to help if and when labor began.

With my parents now settled in our guestroom, my Tuesday was spent actively trying to naturally induce labor.  I had an appointment with a midwife, and requested that she strip my membranes (this does not break the water but encourages the body to begin labor if its ready). The midwife said I was about 3cm dilated so I went home ready to increase that number and encourage contractions.  I mowed our grass using our push lawnmower, and then, my parents and the children and I went for a long walk to our nearby park.

When I got home, I was having mild contractions with some consistency.  We also had rain in the forecast, so Chris was concerned about highway closures.

Hubby and I made the decision about 4 o’clock that I should head to the hospital.

Brady's Birthday Story Part 1

 Brady's Birth Story Part 1

Before I begin telling about Brady‘s birth story, it’s important to understand that every single birth experience I have impacts the next birth experience.  Tracey‘s birth, and the twins births, are kind of their own stand-alone experiences. Tracey‘s birth being the first time I gave birth, and the twins being the only time I’ve given birth to twins. But my experience having Lee Lee, dictated how I handled my labor with Hunter. And, my experience having Hunter dictated how I handled my labor with Brady. I am entirely grateful that Brady is our final baby, because I know my experience birthing Brady would impact the next birth experience... and, frankly, I don't want to have any more.

When Addallee Marigold was born, I went to the hospital shortly after midnight on my due date because I had been timing contractions for a few hours, and things seemed to be picking up. I was still in early labor, but, everyone told me after having twins, my single baby would be born very quickly. They were wrong!  I labored at the hospital for nearly 8 hours before Lee Lee was born.

So with Hunter, I was determined to delay going to the hospital as long as possible because laboring at the hospital is no fun. Laboring away from the hospital is not fun either... but one is better than the other. As a result, when my husband finally insisted on taking me to the hospital after I had been in active labor with Hunter for most of the day, Hunter was born less than 90 minutes after I walked through the hospital doors.  He was actually born within about 5 minutes of my husband arriving at the hospital.

And while laboring at the hospital with Hunter, I went from 6 cm, to delivering him in about 15 minutes.  In many ways, Hunter’s birth was an ideal hospital birth scenario for me. I basically arrived to have the baby.  The downside was, there was of course the fear, what if I hadn’t made it to the hospital.

So with Brady, both of those birth experiences impacted how we handled my labor.

Hubby and I went away for a Babymoon getaway the weekend before my due date. My due date was Wednesday, May 19, so we headed to Grand Junction on Friday, May 14 for an overnight. We planed to return home the next day, on Saturday, May 15. We had pedicures, enjoyed going to dinner, and I started having regular contractions as the night went on. I could talk through them, and we were not panicking, but we thought there was a good chance that I would wake up in active labor.

We made it through the night without incident, but I woke up the next morning having consistent contractions and not wanting to go to breakfast -- I just wanted to get home. For our baby moon weekend, it was abnormal for me to pass up a breakfast out. Both Chris and I agreed that we should head home with the thought that we might be going to the hospital later that day, if not sooner.

Looking Back

As we conclude another year, it was fun to look back and compare a cluster of cousins in front of a tree from five years ago to today.

Image v. Reality

Christmas Eve morning, I snapped this picture of myself enjoying my morning coffee in the early morning quiet and stillness of our main floor in front of the Christmas tree.

My description is completely true.  Nothing I wrote is false... but I left a few things out.

In reality, the statement should read something like this:

Christmas Eve morning, I snapped this picture of myself enjoying my morning coffee in the early morning quiet and stillness of our main floor in front of the Christmas tree.  Here's hoping I can get all this clean laundry folded and put away and cleaned up in time for Santa to come -- and some of it won't even get put away -- it should go straight into the suitcase since we're leaving for St. Louis in approximately 48 hours.  If I need to be up at 4:00am doing chores, at least I can enjoy our Christmas tree and put on a Christmas movie while doing it.  It's okay to fold laundry in the family room, right?

Mmmmm... coffee is good.  Coffee keeps this Mama going.

Wow, that's really a weird face I'm making.  I guess that is my face at 4:00am.

White Chirstmas

A heavy, wet snow started falling in the morning on Christmas Eve, and it was the PERFECT kind of snow for building a snowman!

It really was the first snow that our children have ever experienced that was so perfect for snowman building.  They had a BALL and came in sopping went and completely happy after about an hour-and-a-half outside.

Merry Christmas from the Mountain Millers!

Merry Christmas from our Crew of Mountain Millers!

Our Christmas Letter:

High points of 2021 by Season:

Winter 2021:

We celebrated the New Year in St. Louis with Chris’ family where Howard and Caroline turned 5.  Tracey turned 7 later that month marked by an outdoor horse trolley party with friends.

Spring 2021:

After so much time at home in 2020, we surprised our children with a Spring Break road trip to visit Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.  Another surprise on the trip was 4 nights at Great Wolf Lodge in Arizona - What Fun!  In May, we welcomed our sixth child, a boy, Brady Christopher Miller.  Our crew was thrilled to even up our family with 3 girls and 3 boys (our own Brady Bunch).

Summer 2021:

In June and July the road trips continued as we drove through a total of 13 states for some family adventures.  Points of interest included Sanden Family Fun with Brooke’s family in Washington State, Noah’s Ark in Kentucky with some Miller cousins, Michigan fishing, and a Chuckwagon dinner in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  We’re doing our best to pass the travel bug on to our children.

Autumn 2021:

Back to school for us included Howard and Caroline starting kindergarten at the same school where Tracey started 2nd grade, and Chris teaches.  Brooke went back to in-person teaching so Lee Lee and Hunter began school at a Christian preschool east of Rifle, and Brady started spending a few days a week with a nanny in Rifle.  Chris began a part-time job at a restaurant in Silt and he’s enjoying his new work and coworkers.  October brought us a restful family weekend in Vail before Addallee’s 4th Birthday (a bowling party with friends), Halloween, and Hunter’s 2nd Birthday in November.  Christmas came early when we purchased a 2016 camper that sleeps 8 and Chris and our big kids have already begun family mountain camping adventures. (Brady and I will hold off joining them until he can sit up on his own.)

End of 2021:

Our Holiday season has begun with visits from family and enjoyable seasonal activities for all.  We love this time of year and feel truly blessed to be able to spend time with our loved ones and make memories together.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” ~ Joshua 1:9

Girls and Boys

My first project for Christmas break was completed by midday on Saturday -- creating a Boys' Room and a Girls' Room where our Kids' Room and Guest Room used to be.

This is the first time we've split up our big kids since Howard and Caroline moved into Tracey's room over 4 years ago.  Howard and Caroline have ALWAYS shared a room -- even before they were born... haha but now we have our girls in the big room, and Howard and Hunter sharing a smaller room.  Lee Lee has been in the Big Kids' Room for over two years.  It was definitely time for this change, but it marks a bittersweet milestone -- in all likelihood, our big kids will never all share a room again in our home.  I assured them that in hotels, and at grandparents they probably will still share a room sometimes.

This also marked Hunter's first time in a big boy bed -- and by his moving to the Boys' Room, that freed up a spot in the nursery for Brady to move into that room and a nice big crib.

Yay!

So Right

She put a bow on her head and sat under the tree and said,

"Mama, the present is me!"

She is so right.  I hope she has even a small understanding of how incredibly correct her statement is.

The Week Before Christmas

I saw this on facebook the other day, and I'm entirely sure that whomever wrote it has been peering in our windows the past few days.

Christmas Spirit Day!

Thursday was Christmas Spirit day at the kids' school.

We certainly had fun dressing up for the spirit day.

Now... Christmas Vacation!
