Hunter Nicholas -- His Name

As you may remember from the previous Birth Story Posts, Hunter was born on a Friday evening after a day spent with Hubby.

You may also remember that Hunter was born about 90 minutes after I arrived at the hospital, and about 10 minutes after Hubby arrived at the hospital.

Hunter was born at 5:15pm and almost immediately after he was born, Hubby and I made the decision to try to get our four older children to the hospital asap so they could meet Hunter that night before bed instead of their waiting until Saturday morning.

We knew it would be chaotic, and a late night for them... but then they could sleep in on Saturday having already met their baby brother.

We did a fun gender reveal for them with a small balloon filled with blue confetti, and then we told them (and my parents, and the baby-sitter and her mother who were so wonderful to bring our kids to the hospital) the baby's name.

His name was Hunter Miller... middle name still to come.

The kids were so excited to meet Hunter, and Howard loved that the two boys were Howard and Hunter.

Then, we started face timing Hubby's side of the family so the kids could tell their Memaw and Pepaw, and Aunts and Uncles and cousins the exciting news.  That they had a new baby BROTHER, and his name is Hunter.

In all that fun and commotion, something happened that I did not expect.

Hubby and I have NEVER announced a name of our child before the child is born.  For one, we usually do not know the gender in advance.  We only knew that Lee Lee was a girl -- the other four were a surprise, so we were never sure of the name.  Secondly, we usually ARE NOT SURE of the name until the baby arrives.  Hubby and I have usually had a few conversations, but we are never 100% sure of the name prior to meeting the baby.

Not infrequently, we have made a last minute switch or discussion or compromise or further discussed the purpose and meaning behind one of their names.

And then we introduce the new baby to everyone with their First, Middle, and Last names already decided.

With Hunter, we knew the first name -- and I thought we knew the middle name if we had a boy, but earlier that day, Hubby had expressed some opinions that he was not sure of the middle name if we had a boy.

So, when Hunter was born at 5:15 in the evening, and we knew he and I were doing well, Hubby and I made the decision to get the kids and my parents to the hospital, and Hubby zipped over to a party store to get a balloon filled with blue confetti.  I tried to get cleaned up and settle myself and Hunter into our room at the hospital before everyone arrived.

Hubby and I never took the time to revisit the discussion of Hunter's middle name because we knew we had time.  The more important things at that time were making sure Hunter got to meet his family... and Hubby and I knew we would take the time necessary to discuss and agree upon a middle name after the commotion of everyone meeting their baby brother.

All that being said... here is what I never expected.

As soon as we told our family that his name was Hunter Miller, middle name to be determined, everyone had a suggestion as to what the middle name should be.

Not just one family member either, and not just one side of the family -- nearly every female family member that we told had her own opinion about what Hunter's middle name should be.  (By the way, none of them suggested Nicholas.)

They had some fine suggestions but we will never make that mistake again -- introducing a baby with a TBD name.  No suggestions needed, but thanks.

So... back to how we determined Hunter's name.

Hunter had been a name Hubby and I had on the table since I was pregnant with the twins.  If they had both been boys, they would have been Howard and Hunter.  While Hunter is not a family name from Hubby's side of the family, I feel like it is simply because they are all Hunters.  It is not just a fun hobby, or an excuse for men to go play cards in the woods, they love hunting.  They are skilled at hunting and they take their responsibility as hunters very seriously.  I feel as though Hunter is a family name from the Miller side.

Regarding his middle name, I thought we had determined the middle name of our second boy many years ago.  My entire pregnancy, I thought we were completely settled on the middle name if our baby was a boy.  But, earlier on Friday, Hubby had asked my thoughts for a middle name to go with Hunter, and I told him the name that I thought had been agreed upon years earlier, when Hubby dropped the bomb, that he didn't really like that name.

We discussed the reasons that I valued the name, and he expressed his reasons for disliking it and not feeling right about it.

Then, he said that if we took a tally of family names being used with our children, my family was in the lead and he should get to choose the middle name because more of my family names were being used with our children.

We went through and talked about which names counted toward each side of the family... and which names were not family names, but that we had agreed upon together for a different reason.

THEN he started sharing his suggestions for middle names.

They were not good.

They were very... out-there.

They are names that I did not even like a little.

So after much back and forth, I pointed out that Hubby was correct and that we had used more of my family names than his... but these names he was suggesting were NOT family names from his side.

I said that it would be completely different if he was suggestion a family name like... and I rattled off about four family names from his side, one of which was Nicholas.

As soon as Hubby heard the name Nicholas, which is his brother's name, I saw on his face that Nicholas would be the middle name.

Hubby is very close to his brother and has a great deal of respect for his brother.  I remember from when we were dating that Hubby would talk about his brother as whom he was closest to at the time.

I make it a practice to not talk about the names that we did not name our children because I don't want someone preferring the name we did not choose.  In this case, however, I will make one exception.

As I was rattling off names from Hubby's side of the family, I mentioned about four names, and two of them were Nicholas, and Stanton.

Now, Hubby's brother's name is Nicholas Stanton -- so both of these names would have fulfilled the purpose of honoring his brother.

By the time Hunter was born, regarding his middle names, (as far as I remember it) there were three possible names still on the table:  the original middle name that I preferred, Nicholas, and Stanton.

Then, after talking to all the family, there were about six names on the table... not really but it felt like there were because everyone had given us the merits of their favorite middle name.

In the end, both Hubby and I preferred Nicholas but one factor made us consider Stanton even longer.  Nick and his wife Mandy were expecting their third child in three days.  Literally, three days -- I had Hunter on Friday, and her C-section was scheduled for the following Monday.

They knew it was going to be a boy, and they had already chosen and announced the name of Sloan Stanton Miller.

Their first son Silas, and our first son, Howard, have the same middle names -- Howard James, and Silas James.

We liked Nicholas better, but it would have been cool for both sets of boy cousins to have the same middle names --
Howard James, and Silas James,
Hunter Stanton, and Sloan Stanton...

We actually called Nick before we made the final decision.  He was the only additional person we asked for his opinion about the name because it is he who Hunter's middle name is honoring.  We did not leave the decision up to him, but we took his thoughts under strong consideration.  Both Hubby and I preferred Nicholas, and Nick said, "I think Hunter Nicholas is awesome!"

And Hunter Nicholas he is, after his dad's little brother, his very special Uncle Nick -- who is a Hunter.

Addallee Marigold

I have not yet posted how we came to choose Addallee's name.  With our other three children, we did not know if we were having a boy or a girl, so the naming process was a little different in that we really could not choose a name before the baby arrived.  This time, we knew we were having a baby girl, so we really could have chosen a name before she arrived... but we didn't.  We always have some ideas for names... a short list of names, but we have to meet our baby before we decide, for sure, what his or her name will be.

In the case of Addallee, it took us the longest to agree for sure on her name.  She was born at 11:26am, and we probably agreed on her name about 1:00pm.

We named her Addallee because we liked the significance that every letter occurs twice.  We like that through the double letters of her name, she is an extra blessing and given another chance.  We had some medical situations arise during my pregnancy with her, and so we  were really drawn to the extra blessing and second chance idea of the letters of her name.  We also liked that a nickname would be Lee Lee -- which also holds up to the same double symbolism.

All of our children are named after someone we know, and Addallee is no exception... although the person she is named after, we do not know personally.  She is named after someone we know of.  Her namesake also had a medical scare early in life and was named Addallee (double of each letter) because God gave her a second chance at life.

Her middle name is Marigold based on a story that Hubby read while I was pregnant about the marigold flower.  Here is a portion of the passage:
"Many experienced gardeners follow a concept called companion planting: placing certain vegetables and plants near each other to improve growth for one or both plants. For example, rose growers plant garlic near their roses because it repels bugs and prevents fungal diseases. Among companion plants, the marigold is one of the best: It protects a wide variety of plants from pests and harmful weeds. If you plant a marigold beside most any garden vegetable, that vegetable will grow big and strong and healthy, protected and encouraged by its marigold."

By naming our daughter Addallee Marigold, we were celebrating the double blessing and second chance of our sweet baby girl, and believing and claiming the great joy she will bring not only to our family, and to her siblings but to the entire world around her, and everyone with whom she has contact.

Discovering we were expecting Addallee Marigold was a big surprise to us, and then the journey of her pregnancy was more trying than our other pregnancies have been.  That being said, we know she was such a gift from God, because we did not plan on another baby in the timing of her arrival -- but God perfectly planned our fourth baby, and the timing of her arrival.  Just as He perfectly planned her arrival, He has perfectly planned every day she will walk the Earth, and we are believing she will be a beautiful, encouraging, and joyful influence on everyone around her.

Names

I love the names that my generation (and my demographic) are naming our kids.  I had to add my demographic, because, truthfully, I don't have a large circle of friends outside my demographic... so I don't know a lot of their kids names... and I had to add the part about my demographic because some names out there are just plain weird.

But, that disclaimer aside, I love the names that my friends and acquaintances have chosen for their children.

First let's review the top ten (based on my experience) very common names of my peers that were a dime a dozen in school as I was growing up:
  • Ashley
  • Rachel
  • Megan
  • Sarah
  • Chris/Christopher
  • Nicholas
  • Steve
  • Lauren/Laura
  • Katie
  • Ryan
I heard these names ALL THE TIME.  To me, the all just seem very average, probably because I heard them so often.

Now, as my generation is naming children, I love the old-fashioned names that my generation is bringing back.  I do feel that I am doing my part with the names Caroline and Howard, and even Tracey is an older name... not grandmother old, but still a few decades ago old.  Even the Miller cousins are doing their part with older, less common names like Zivah, Mayah, Judah, and Silas.

Some of my favorite names of my friends' children include:
  • Loretta (Lottie)
  • Hazel
  • Landon
  • Levi
  • Remington
  • Hunter
  • Gus
  • Micah
  • Elaine
  • Heidi
  • Abigail
  •  Charlotte
  • Eleanor
  • Stella
  • Emmett
  • Claire
  • Quincy
  • Soren
  • Beatrice (Bea)
  • Sullivan
  • Aidan
  • Selah
... and so many more.

Sufficed to say, I do not know of a single child age five or under named Chris, Nick, Sarah, Rachel, Ryan, Megan, Steve or Lauren

Nothing against those names, but I love that older names are coming back because I think they're beautiful, classy and classic... and hopefully the people bearing these names will be likewise in their character.

Their Names

In my opinion, Hubby and I have a really special marriage.  I love being his wife and I love the way we love and support each other.  We make such a great team... and our life really is a beautiful relationship of teamwork.

There are some things that we have done that I think are a little different than our peers or other married couples, and, obviously, for everyone, to each their own... but I love the way we have done things.

One thing we've done, which I just love involves the names of our children -- not only do we not tell anyone the names of our children before they are born, but we really do not decide until we meet them.

This is made a little more easier by the fact that we keep our baby's gender a surprise until the baby is born.  Hubby's first job as Daddy to that baby is announcing to me, and the whole room if our new baby is a boy or a girl.  I love that I have heard his voice making these announcements for all our children.  For each, his voice has had such joy -- he often gets choked up, and the sound of his voice is the most excited that I've ever heard him.  Each and every time, his voice has such a combination of joy, surprise, delight, pride, relief... its almost impossible to describe, and it is a tone of his voice, I absolutely love to hear.

Coming into each birth of our children, we really have not decided on their names.  In fact, we don't really talk about names much during the pregnancy -- a few times when it is just the two of us, and all of those discussions remain unresolved.  The discussions usually begin around four months, and end with our realizing we will never agree on names... then we revisit the topic again every few months.  Finally, in my last month of pregnancy we have a really great conversation where we come away feeling about 95% sure of the names of the baby we're about to meet... but we have to meet him or her before we're sure.

Because we're not sure of the gender... and we haven't fully decided on the name, we don't tell anyone the baby's name before he or she is born.  I absolutely love that secret that our marriage has shared, now three times.  We are very close to our moms, and I will say, they have each had some idea of names that we have liked, and might possibly be in the running... but we always tell them, they will have to wait to meet their new grandchildren to find out.

And the truth of the matter is, that even when I am days away from giving birth, and I'm running a few possible names through in my head, we really never DECIDE on the name until we have met and held our new baby.

Maybe we think we have a first name... maybe we've tossed around a few middle names... but never know our child's name until we actually NAME our child.

As a result, I don't think we've ever told our families "IT'S A GIRL!" or "IT'S A BOY!" -- instead we introduce them to their new grandchild and they learn, from the name, if its a boy or a girl.

We introduced them to Tracey Ann... and then two years later, to Howard James and Caroline Christine.

Naming our children has not come easily to us... we don't always agree on which names belong in our family, which is why it has been the coolest process of husband and wife to discuss and compromise over months of pregnancy...and take our time deciding on a name... only to culminate in that beautiful birth day when we tell our child his or her name... and he or she is the first one to hear it.

One of us literally says to each other, "Is it Tracey Ann?" "Is it Howard James?" "Is it Caroline Christine?" -- like it is an old friend one of us doesn't quite recognize... and the other confirms -- yes, this is Tracey Ann, Howard James and Caroline Christine.

Naming our children, together, without anyone else's input or knowledge has been one of the absolute coolest parts of our marriage and beginning to our journey as parents.

Ohhh, the List.

Ohhh, there is a list.

There is a list...
of names...
baby names.

There is an on-going, never-ending, ever-changing, hypothetical, not-needed-at-present list of baby names.

I don't remember the first time I thought, "I like that name.  I might name a baby that someday," but I can assure you, it was at a young age, and it was the first of the same thought that would cross my mind countless times in the years to come.

For some reason, I think I have four names at the moment... for the four hypothetical children that Hubby and I might have.  And I think, "Perfect.  Finally, I've settled on the names I like best."

Then I think, I'd better write these names down, lest, I'll forget when the time comes to name my four yet-to-be-conceived babies.  It's in writing down those names that the flood gates open.

I cannot write down four names, I write down twenty names.

Ohhh, the List.

At present, names that top my list are (in no particular order):

Names for Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice,
The Little Miss:
    Leah
    Abigail
    Grace
    Tracey
    Helen
    Liebe (Pronounced Lee-bee)
    Susannah
    Stella
    Eleanor
    Christine
    Paige
    Elizabeth
    Trinity
    Addison
    Lexington
    Remington
    Phoebe
    Meredith
    Charlotte
    Caroline
    Samantha
    Isabella
    Henrietta
    Effie
    Virginia

Names for Snips and Snails and Puppy-dog Tails,
    The Little Gentleman:
    Howard
    Hunter
    Sanden
    Nathan
    Jackson
    Alonzo
    Brady
    LeRoy
    Tristan
    Landon
    Peyton
    Clayton
    Milton
    Mason
    Lloyd

    ... So that settles it...
Chris and I will be having 43 children.  Oh, Joy.
Yes, Joy... there's another name I like.
    Make that 44 children.
    Ohhh, the List.
