Surrender

Yesterday, I made a discovery about homemaking and motherhood... and maybe just this stage of life in general.  In order to accomplish anything, I need to surrender.

Yes, I need to surrender the task to God... but, also, I really need to surrender the state of the house, the timeline for achieving it, and even the animals and baby, to accomplish the project at hand.

Yesterday, in addition to a few others chores, I accomplished three big goals -- Tracey Ann was cared for, my workout was done, and I made applesauce.

Yesterday, I did a nice spot-cleaning of the kitchen, and took the entire day to make applesauce.  I was a project that started and stopped throughout the day depending on the needs of Tracey Ann.  In the end, I only completed half the applesauce project -- I made the applesauce... I still have to can the applesauce.  Also, I had to surrender my kitchen, and my dining room table, to the applesauce project, but applesauce was made.

In the past, when I would make something like applesauce, I would clean the kitchen first, then set up a system for washing, cutting , coring, and cooking the apples.  Then, I would keep an on-going pot of apples cooking on the stove for hours until all the apples were cooked, and batch by batch I'd transfer the cooked apples to my applesauce maker.  As applesauce was made, I would fill mason jars so that jars were ready to go in the pressure cooker to be canned.  As different parts of the project were completed, I would do the dishes and clean the kitchen again.  It might take several loads of running the dishwasher, and several sinks full of soapy water, but dishes would all be washed as I was finished with them.  The entire project would take several hours, and much of the day, but, at the end of the day, I would have batches of canned applesauce, and a clean kitchen.

With my baby girl, there is a new normal for this kind of big project.  Just cutting and coring the apples took several hours, and had to be accomplished in several attempts.  Cooking the apples and making applesauce took another few hours and several attempts.  Canning has not even begun, and, at the end of the day, I did not have a clean kitchen.  Tracey Ann played in her jumper during one time when I was cooking apples and making applesauce.  Another time, she was eating her dinner while she was watching me turn the crank on the applesauce.  Usually she goes right from her highchair after dinner into a bath tub... but not last night.  Last night, I was ALMOST done with the last batch of cooked apples and I just needed to crank it into applesauce, but Tracey Ann was DONE with dinner and wanted to be let down from the highchair.  Well, she got a nice little playtime after dinner crawling around on the floor of the dining room, and under our kitchen table with blueberry-stained hands (even though I had washed them off), and remains of her dinner in her hair.

In order to accomplish making applesauce, other things must be surrendered -- the state of the kitchen, the routine of the baby, the previous timeline for making the applesauce, and more.

I surrender... and I made applesauce.

Treasuring the Present: October

October is one of my absolute favorite months.

These are just a few of the reasons why:
  • Autumn weather -- crisp and chilly
  • COLLEGE FOOTBALL -- the heart of the season
  • Baseball playoffs (usually including the St. Louis Cardinals)
  • By October, the school year maybe hasn't calmed down... but at least there is a routine
  • Hunting season -- it makes Hubby so happy, and, Lord Willing, we get meat for our freezer
  • Canning season... I'm not sure how this will work this year with our baby girl, but, traditionally, October is canning season for me
  • Usually the first snow in the mountains
  • With our precious baby girl this year the season that has always been oen of my favorites, is now even better -- her first football game, her first pumpkin, her first Michigan games (on tv), her first Cardinals playoff season, all culminating in her first Halloween
  • The commencement of the Holiday season
I LOVE October!

September Highlights

I was so excited about writing about the start of October yesterday, that I didn't actually sum up September.  In sum... September was crazy.

September was a whirlwind.  The first three weeks of the month were spent soaking up as much time as possible with my husband, who I was not with for the majority of the summer... but this time was far too little given that we were both back to work with a new school year.  My work was made especially complicated in September because most of the month was spent trying to create a system for my students to survive when I left for Texas for my last practicum placement on Sept 23.  September was a blur... which is all the more reason to highlight a few of the best and memorable parts of the month.

Some highlights include:
  • Canning pears (and peaches) with a few of the free moments I had -- I love canning in the fall
  • Fun times at the Texas State Fair
  • Away from my hubby and animals again, Hubby and I are loving FaceTime to see each other while we talk... in this picture, he is holding Lexie so I can see her too.
  • Hubby's 33rd birthday on Sept 13!  I am so thankful for this man!
  • Hubby and I went out to a nice dinner to celebrate his birthday
  • We got to see our little Nugget on the 20 week ultrasound.  The little Jitterbug was moving like crazy... in this picture is a head on the left and a foot right in the middle.  We opted not to find out if we're having a boy or a girl, but we are so grateful that everything looks healthy.
  • My first night in Austin, my best friend Kelley took me to a Texas Long-Horns football game!  Hook 'em Horns!
  • My friend Obinna and I had a blast in Dallas at the State Fair of Texas
  • Lloyd was happy as a clam to have Chris and me back to together and at home for most of the month.  Have you ever seen a more relaxed or contented dog than the one in this picture?
Adios September.  Welcome, October!

Great Saturday!

What a great Saturday Hubby and I had!

  • College Gameday IN Ann Arbor
  • A productive day -- I'm almost always productive on Saturdays until the Michigan kickoff.  The fact that Michigan didn't kickoff until 6pm meant I had a REALLY productive day.
  •  Canning Pears!
  • Watching Miami beat Florida.
  • Watching Georgia beat South Carolina.
  • Enjoying the Notre Dame v. MICHIGAN game with my whole little family -- Hubby, Lloyd, Lexie, and Nugget -- all of us in Michigan gear except Lexie.  Even Nugget was dressed for the Wolverines by my wearing a Michigan maternity shirt with "Quarterback in Training" across the belly.
  • Watching Michigan BEAT the Irish -- 41-30!  WHAT A GAME!!
Lloyd was never concerned that Michigan wouldn't come through.  I can assure you I was not nearly as relaxed while we were watching the game as Lloyd is in this picture.

How was your Saturday?

Pictures of Saturday

Our Saturday was really very enjoyable... except for Michigan's HORRIBLE performance in their football game Saturday night.

My Hubby's 4am hunting alarm didn't go off Saturday morning, so he opted to spend the day at home with me and we had a wonderful, productive, fall day.

Here are some pictures of our September Saturday:

We can always tell when Lloyd is in trouble because he stays just outside the dog door, and just pokes his head inside as if to say, "Am I still in trouble?"  Just to be clear, we have never actually banished him outside... it seems to be his punishment for himself.

While I was taking picture of the guilty-faced Lloyd, Lexie came into the room, and looked at him like he was crazy.

Saturday morning meant College Gameday and canning peaches!

And two peaches-and-cream pies

YUM!

We've gone a little peach-crazy this fall.

My hubby even made some peach freezer-jam... so jam, canned peaches, and pies.  Whew!  What a productive Saturday morning!

Michigan game time -- representing our favorite teams with my drinks.

My hubby cooked a wonderful dinner.  Eggplant parmesan, grilled salmon and caprese salad!

My husband seems to think that Lloyd needs ear-plugs when I'm cheering for Michigan.

Very funny, Guys.

In all seriousness, Lloyd does seem pretty scared of me during Michigan games.  His name is Lloyd Carr, we've go to work on his loyalty!

Obviously I do not cheer as loud as I've been accused, if my hubby can fall asleep during the Michigan game.  This was his idea of our "watching the game together".

Eventually, Lexie took charge of the remotes.

All-in-all, a great family Saturday.

As of Late: August 2012

It's the third Thursday of the month... As of Late with Critty Joy!

Lately... I've been back to work and four LONG days of work have felt like several weeks have passed... is it really only Thursday?

Lately... I've become a wife who cans!  :-D  I've canned peach jam and I have tomatoes coming on Saturday so I'll be canning tomatoes this weekend.  This is literally a life-goal coming true for me and I am so proud of myself.

All dressed up and ready to be given as gifts!
Lately... I'm getting back into my books on tape while I'm driving all over the Western Slope.  Any suggestions?

Lately... I'm remembering how COOL braille is, and thankfully, I'm remembering braille pretty well.  I have a fully braille-reading student this next year so braille will be coming out my ears this year!

Lately... I've been planning my first baby shower to take place in mid-September and I'm really excited and a little nervous about it.  Please send all your great baby shower ideas my way during the next few weeks.

Invitations sent - Check!
Lately... I'm missing the Olympics, but its nice not to have the television on 24-7 like I might have while the Olympics were on.

Lately... I've found that a clean bed sheet can double as a tablecloth.  A tablecloth will definitely be on my Christmas List... but I feel very resourceful and economically responsible in the meantime.

Beautiful black tablecloth
Lately... I am REALLY looking forward to college football starting.  These weeks of being back to work without college football are really some of my hardest weeks of the year.  I know that's awful, but when school starts, college football begins and I look forward to every Michigan game every week.  Just 16 more days til Michigan's season opener... 16 more days...

Adventures in Canning

I'm one step closer to checking something off my bucket list.  :-D

One of my goals is to be a wife and mother who cans fruits and vegetables... and anything else I can learn to can.

Jars sanitized - Check!
Growing up, my mom canned every summer and fall -- tomatoes, applesauce, mincemeat, green beans, strawberry jam, yellow-wax beans, raspberry jam... and I'm sure there were more.  We had cabinets FULL of canned fruits and vegetables in our basement, and I always knew if something happened that we had to hide in the basement (tornado, nuclear attack), we had plenty of food.

20 lbs of fresh, ripe Colorado peaches - Check!
My true goal would be to have a garden someday where I grow my own veggies, and then can them -- but so far, Lexie (my kitty) and I have killed every plant in our care.  Thankfully, life is long and I have many things to learn.

Sugar, Pectin, Wax, Space, Motivation - Check!
Yesterday, I took my first step toward becoming a canning wife.  I have canned with my mom, in my mom's kitchen, but yesterday was my first time canning by myself and in my own kitchen with my own materials.

20lbs of Colorado Peaches
6 batches of peach jam
6 hours of work
24 12oz jars of jam
12 8oz jars of jam
First canning endeavor -- SUCCESS!

36 jars of peach jam! Whew!
To be honest, we don't use a lot of jam, but Hubby and I both really liked the idea of having jars of jam on hand for gifts.  We tasted the jam, and we agreed it is worth sharing.  (I won't give away baked goods that I don't think taste good).  The jam tasted great! :-D

First canning adventure completed!
My favorite part of canning: The knife cuts don't matter!

I am horrible at chopping, slicing, dicing, mincing... anything you can do with a knife and a cutting board.  I try so hard to make even cuts to have my veggies the same size, but so far, I am hopeless!  When I was chopping the peaches, the knife cuts didn't matter!!  The chopped peaches were going into a big kettle and mixed all around and turned in to jam -- no one cars about the different size of the chopped peaches!  YAY!

Lexie tried to help in any way she could... luckily when the jars with hot jam started coming out, she made herself scarce.

"Mom, you don't need a highlighter to can... let me get this out of your way!"
"Behind these jars, no one can see me!"
