Treasures

My dad and his dad were nothing alike.  I won't go into details... but they are VERY DIFFERENT MEN.  That being said, some aspects of their lives where very similar.

My grandfather married my grandmother (Nangie), had three children (a son, and then twins, a son and daughter).  The marriage was not good, and when Pearl Harbor was bombed, my grandfather enlisted in the Army as an Army Dentist and served in the South Pacific for the duration of the war.  When the war ended, he did not come home, but instead moved to Europe where he began a new life and met a German woman, 21 years his junior.  After a messy bi-continental divorce from Nangie, he married the German woman (our family came to call Grandmother Klara).  My grandfather promised Grandmother Klara the world -- travel, wealth, security, treasure from around the world with one condition, he did not want any more children.  Grandmother Klara accepted his terms and the two of them were married 45 years before my grandfather died at age 100.

Grandmother Klara lived another 13 years after grandfather died surrounded by remnants and knick-knacks from their life together -- Oriental rugs, Lenox crystal, Ivory sculptures, Hand-painted plates, Jeweled lamps and chandeliers from all over the world.  And, her last years were very lonely.  Since she and my grandfather never invested their time or their love in children or grandchildren, Grandmother Klara had a very isolated final decade of life with her treasures from their travels.

My father was married to a woman and had two children, my sister and brother, before divorcing their mother (an alcoholic) and gaining custody of both his children.  A few years later, he met my mother, 21 years his junior, and he did not promise her the world.  He promised her love, and one child of her own, if she wanted one.  She did want one -- she would not have married my dad if he had not promised her baby of her own.

They agreed on one child, but my mom always said that I had been boy, she would have gone back to the negotiation table for the chance at another one.

My dad was 51 years old when I was born -- he didn't desire to have another 4 children with my mom -- but he was willing to bless her with one, and he invested all his love, time, and energy in their one child, me.

Now, my mom's one child (myself) has had one child, and my baby girl is the joy of my mom's world (not to mention my dad's).  Being 21 years his junior, it is likely that my mother will outlive my father, and, unlike Grandmother's final years of life, my mom's final years (still many decades off) will not be at all lonely, but filled with love, time, and energy with me, my husband, and our children.

My father blessed my mom with one child, and as a result, her final years will be full of laughter, joy, and love, as opposed to my grandfather, who blessed his wife with knick-knacks, and her final years were full of dusting those earthly treasures.  What a stark contrast of two lives stemming from one decision.

My husband and I are not wealthy.  We work hard, and scrimp where we can, and do not have as much security as, somedays, I would prefer we have... but we adore our daughter and have never for a moment second-guessed her prescense in our life.  We also hope to give her siblings in the future, and my husband and I are on the same page about our desire to expand our family, despite our growing bills and dwindling salaries.  We live on faith and love... and not much else.

We know we wish to invest our lives, our time, and our resources in a family, and we fully expect to sacrifice items and experiences in order to invest in our family, and we expect to be blessed throughout our lives for those decisions.

The Bible says that three things are eternal: God, God's Word, and the souls of men...

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21

Where are your treasures?

Why We Chose A Hospital Birth

I am an old-fashioned person.  I often wear skirts, I bake and can, I want to stay home with my child, I am a homemaker, I prefer natural remedies to treat illnesses and, though Hubby and I are in the field of education, we are praying about possibly homeschooling our children.

I don't think any of my friends or family would have been surprised had I told them Hubby and I were planning a home birth for the birth of our first child.  Some of them may have tried to persuade us to change our minds, but I don't think any of them would have been shocked had that been our decision.  A home birth was NOT our decision.  From the very beginning of our pregnancy, Hubby and I both felt led to plan for, prepare for, and carry out, a hospital birth.

I have known many women who have given birth at home, and all of them highly recommend it, but neither Hubby or I felt inclined to follow their recommendations.  The most common endorsements for it I have heard involve how comfortable the women felt, and what a beautiful experience it was.  I don't doubt their word at all; however, we chose a hospital birth, and we were incredibly pleased with our decision.

Hubby and I prepared for labor and delivery through The Bradley Method of childbirth and we attended twelve weekly classes with three other couples.  We were the ONLY couple in our class who was planning a hospital birth.  I think being in the minority helped Hubby and me to discuss a little more extensively the reasons we did feel strongly about having a hospital birth, but we never felt pressured to change our plan just because the other couples were planning home births.

Here are some of the factors that contributed to our decision to plan for a hospital birth:
  •  Hubby and I both have incredible respect for the field of Western medicine.  Both my father and Chris' sister are physicians, and we were raised to trust doctors.
  • We not only trust doctors to handle medical emergencies, we also trust doctors to first "do no harm" -- we trusted them to let us have an un-medicated birth as our first choice
  • We live 25 miles from the nearest maternity hospital... and that hospital is not equipped to handle high-risk situations.  If we planned a home birth, and, God forbid, something necessitated our getting to a hospital, we would have to rush 25 miles to the nearest hospital... and then possibly be sent 100+ miles on to a hospital that could better handle our emergency.  We didn't want all of that time to elapse in the case of an emergency.
  • Many people told us that having a home birth does not make a mess, that the midwives have a great system... but we have a hard time picturing that, and it really seems like it would make a huge mess.
Despite Hubby and I being like-minded on wanting a hospital birth, we did our part to educate ourselves and prepare ourselves to be very active participants in the hospital birth scenario, and I think it was our plan, preparation, and research that led to our wonderful, comfortable, and incredibly fulfilling hospital experience.

In the future, I will post how we prepared for our hospital birth, and what made the experience so comfortable and rewarding.

Treasuring the Present: Decisions

Hubby and I have some big decisions to make soon.

A huge decision has already been made -- not necessarily by us -- our family is growing, and we are becoming parents in a few short months.

Ever since finding out we were expecting a baby the choices and decisions have whirled around our heads, hearts, prayers, and conversations.

Do we stay in Rifle?
Should we buy a house?
Should we move?
Where should we go?
Should we be closer to family?
Should I keep working?
Can we afford for me to stay home?
Should I start looking for ways I can earn money from home while caring for our child?
Should we move somewhere where Hubby can make more money so we can live more comfortably if I stay home?
If we stay here, what kind of sacrifices will that entail?
If I stay home, what kind of sacrifices will that entail?
If we stay here, what kind of career advancement opportunities do either of us have?
How much of that is in our hands, and how much is out of our hands?

We have so many decisions to make... and they all need to be made, but today, I am treasuring the present.  I am treasuring the time to pray about them, discuss them, make pro/con lists, plan, and the time to not have to make all the decisions tonight.  I am treasuring the time to come before the Lord and ask for guidance, and wisdom, and doors that are opened, and doors that are closed.

Lord, we rejoice in the knowledge that our future is in Your very capable hands.  We ask for wisdom in all the decisions before us.  Please go ahead of us and lead the way.  Let us be able to discern Your way above our ways and follow confidently and faithfully.

Which Path?

When decisions come your way, which one do you choose?
Decisions that can change your next two years... and beyond...
Decisions that tie you down or keep you where you are, and you like where you are?
Decisions that open doors or leave you where you are, and you like where you are?

GRRRRRRRR... what to do?

As of Late: March

As of Late, I'm not sure how it is possibly the 3rd Thursday in March!
  • Lately, I am not sure where my time is going, but I feel like I've been on the go NONSTOP, which I sort of have
  • Lately, I am THRILLED that this weekend Chris is coming up to Eagle!
  • Lately, I have been going down to Greeley or Denver (or Florida or Michigan) every weekend since Valentine's Day!
  • Lately, I have signed up for a triathlon training at the local rec center, complete with a triathlon on May 7 -- it will be my first!
  • Lately, it does not get easier to leave Chris every weekend. I keep thinking that after a wonderful long weekend, like last weekend when we were in Florida, it should not be hard to say goodbye... BUT IT IS! EVERY WEEK it tears my heart out to say goodbye. My mom says this is a good sign.
  • Lately, Chris and I are 100 days from our wedding!!!! :-D
  • Lately, I am participating in a Bible reading Lent program and I am really enjoying it. It is a chapter from the Bible each day, and its the story of the Gospel - Beginning to Revelation in a nutshell. This week chapters have been from Exodus.
  • Lately, Chris and I are praying for guidance regarding work and location after we're married... we're trying to decide if I am moving there, if he is moving here, or if we are both moving to a new place... and if so - WHERE? Please pray for guidance as we want to follow the Lord's leading and plan for us. Please pray for open doors to be WIDE OPEN and closed doors to be SEALED CLOSE!
Head over to Crittyjoy for other As of Late posts.

Menu Feedback Requested

This is essentially my third consecutive post (one last night, sleep for 10 hours, two this morning), so please scroll down and catch up on my past 12 hours... especially this one.

I am collecting feedback on wedding menus.

What have you liked? What have you disliked?

Do you really pay attention to what you're eating? Only when it's delicious or horrible?

I have about 24 hours to finalize what Chris, my parents and I are going to try at our "tasting" in about 10 days, and then we will make our wedding entree decisions from there.

Does red-meat work when you're not cooking to order? Everyone gets medium-rare whether they want it or not?

Is chicken elegant enough for a wedding?

Is fish a happy medium, or the cop-out choice that says I clearly couldn't decide between steak and chicken?

HELP!

If you don't want to leave a comment, you can always email me at brooke{dot}sanden{at}gmail{dot}com

THANK YOU in advance for your help!
