The True Followers

This Christmas, God has been revealing new things to me about the Christmas story that He never has before... and its still not perfectly clear in my head (like so many big truths and revelations from the God of the universe... my mind cannot quite grasp the whole thing) so forgive me if this post isn't my most clear.

The true followers in the Christmas Story are the shepherds and the wise men.

I have listened to the Christmas Story for three decades now, and read and studied and heard lessons from many different perspectives of the story and things to be learned and applied to my own life.  But, I have always tuned in more to the events in the lives of Mary and Joseph and how their obedience and faithfulness to God's plan was to be applied to my life.

It is true, Mary and Joseph, are very note-worthy and virtuous people in this story, from whom much can be learned.  They each accepted God's plan for them, in a very scary and tumultuous time and accepted callings for which they were not equipped, but God equipped them in all ways at the proper time.  There surely are a great number of lessons to be learned from Mary and Joseph -- and, as a woman and mother, it is very easy to identify with Mary, especially as an expectant mother during the Christmas season.

What I have overlooked for years, however, is that the shepherds and wise men, not Mary and Joseph, were, in fact, the first followers of Jesus.

Mary and Joseph accepted God's calling for them, and they each knew they had been given a very blessed and high calling... but I think each of them were still learning and still pondering what this blessing meant and how this child would be the Savior.  Not to mention, each was a young newlywed, and a first-time parent learning how to provide for one another and their newborn baby during a very dangerous time in history.  Although I cannot know, I do not think these young parents were worshiping their baby upon his entrance into the world any more than all first time parents marvel and stand in awe of their first-born baby upon his or her entrance into the world.

The shepherds and the wise men, however, they followed Jesus.  They worshiped Jesus.  They literally fell to their knees before a newborn baby -- one of the most helpless creatures in the world.

Mary and Joseph obeyed God when things maybe didn't make perfect sense... but these shepherds and wise men did the incomprehensible -- they traveled miles and miles to see a newborn, to which they had no family connection -- not even Jesus' grandmothers came to visit him when he was born -- and then, upon finding this one, specific newborn babe (which I'm sure there were at least a moderate selection of newborns at the time), they fell to their knees and worshiped him.

They worshiped a newborn.

Not only could this "Savior", this "King of Kings" -- even if He was that, not grant them wishes, He could not give absolution, He could not bestow land or forgive debts -- He was a newborn!!!  He could not even talk, or walk, or hold up His head.  Of all the Kings to worship, to bring expensive gifts, these first followers groveled before a baby that could do nothing for them.

I have never thought about this before... I have learned that God called the highest, wisest kings AND the lowliest, loneliest, uneducated working class to witness this miracle... but I never thought about the actual actions and faithfulness of those who were called -- both the wise men and shepherds.

They really were the first followers of Christ; The first worshipers of Jesus; The first to choose blind faith over any reason for the sake of The Son of God.

Talk about a lesson and example to apply to my own life... yes Mary and Joseph's lives make good examples, but the wise men and shepherds obeyed, followed, and worshiped.  That is the example I want to emulate.

Preggers II -- Twins: 33 Weeks

How far along?  33 weeks

How I am feeling?  Really well.  This week marked several milestones and big things I could cross off my To Do list... and it even allowed for some bonus tasks to be accomplished, which makes me feel great.  I definitely am tired at the end of the days, and I am uncomfortable from time to time, but I am feeling really well and excited for Christmas and preparing for the birth of our Savior... and the births of our children.

How big are babies?  The size of pineapples... between 4.2 to 5.8 pounds and 17.2 to 18.7 inches long

Sleep:  Much better now that I'm on some specific heartburn medicine.  Also Tracey Ann seems to be sleeping more soundly as well... so I've been sleeping much better.

Boy/Girl, Boy/Boy, Girl/Girl Predictions: Two babies

Babies Nicknames:  Babies, or Twins

Best moment this weekI've had several best moments of this week  -- administering the final exam for the college class I teach, grading it, and officially being DONE with those obligations; I got my last haircut before the twins arrive and combined it with a day of Christmas shopping with my parents while Hubby watched Tracey Ann; We decorated our Christmas tree over the weekend, and all of my parents, Hubby, and I have made major strides on unpacking our house.  This was a really great week!

Food cravings:  Nothing specific... but I do get very hungry every few hours.  Food is very important to me these days.

Missing:  Well, I thought I would have said something about the ability to reach up high on our Christmas tree to decorate, but I think the fact I wasn't able to decorate the high parts of the tree made it more of a family effort, which was really fun.  So, I guess I'm missing my usual throat and nose... which is currently sore and stuffed respectively.  But that has nothing to do with pregnancy, just winter.  I've been very fortunate to have avoided any and all illnesses thus far throughout the fall and winter.

Movements:  Yes, and I love them.  Sometimes the jabs get a little rough, but for the most part, I absolutely love them and will miss them when the babies are born.

Labor Signs:  Not yet

Comparison:  Here I am carrying Tracey Ann at 33 weeks

and here I am 33 weeks with the twins...

and a side-by-side comparison:

General Attitude: I'm really getting excited about Christmas and the knowledge that after three more work days, I will be on maternity leave -- and still have my parents here to help.  I'm hoping we can finish settling into this house, prepare for Christmas, and do more preparation for the twins before they make their grand entrance.

What I am looking forward to this week:  Three more work days AND DONE!  Also, I am excited that every week the babies grow more and more, and I am very hopeful that we can avoid the NICU when they do arrive.

Milestones: Well, with my reaching 32 weeks, my doctor's office scheduled me for twice weekly Non-Stress Tests (NSTs)... a very ironic name given that the experience of my first one was the most stressful event, thus far, in this pregnancy.  The test involves being hooked up to three monitors, which track the babies' heart rates over a period of 20 minutes minimum.  If the babies move or squirm, their heart rates are not recorded until the nurse finds the heart rates again, and the whole process can take much longer than 20 minutes.  Mine, for example, took over 2 hours before they decided to scrap the NST and take an ultrasound to check on the babies instead.  I was at the doctor's office for over three hours.  So, that is not a great milestone, but after my first test, my doctor said that she thinks this test is only necessary once a week for me instead of twice a week.  Depending on how my next NST goes, I may be declining even the weekly testing.
Also, today being December 14 marks one month from the day they will induce labor if I have not had the twins yet.  I am officially in my last month of pregnancy.

No Idea

I haven't written in a few days, which I don't particularly like to do -- I like to post SOMETHING every day, even if its silly or simple.  Also, I have to be careful about the blog going quiet for a few days because I'm to the point where people could possibly think that my silence is because our twins have arrived... and that isn't the case (yet).

We've just had a busy, enjoyable, Christmas-filled few days and at the end of the day (which is when I write the next day's blog post), I have been exhausted and writing a blog has slipped my mind.  No major news, no major reason for the days off... just enjoying these days before Christmas, and before the twins arrive with my wonderful family (Hubby, Tracey Ann, and my parents).

There is a post I have wanted to write for a few weeks now, but I have hesitated because I don't want to in any way imply that I am unhappy being pregnancy with our twins.  I feel incredibly blessed that we are expecting two babies, and it is a tremendous answer to prayer that they babies are still in utero.

I am not ready to be done with the pregnancy.  I am not asking the doctor to induce as soon as possible.  I am not angry at my husband for "doing this to me," as sitcoms and comedies make a habit of implying.  I am doing very well and I remain incredibly grateful for the blessing of carrying and expecting these twins.

All of that being said, I do want to write this post, not only to inform you, but to help myself remember in the future, that unless you yourself have carried twins, you have NO IDEA what this feels like.

I have now said this to both Hubby and my mother now a few times... and I don't say it in an accusing way, but I find it very amusing that seriously, both of them have No Idea what I am experiencing right now.

Now, I know women experience pregnancy differently, and some women who carry one child have major complications, aches, and pains, and a very rough experience... so I do not know if that is comparable to this, but I certainly can say there are things I am experiencing with this pregnancy, and have been experiencing for months that I NEVER experienced carrying one child -- even in the very last weeks of pregnancy.

  • It is very strange to begin to change Tracey Ann's diaper after a two or three hour period of time to find the her diaper is dry.  I, meanwhile, I have used the restroom upwards of 5 times during that same time frame.  I officially have a bladder smaller than a not-yet-two-year-old.
  • Picking things up off the floor is a real hardship.  I don't want to think of myself as a lazy person, but sometimes I have to consciously stop myself from cursing when I drop something on the floor because it is so difficult and uncomfortable to retrieve.
  • My stomach is so large that the process of putting on socks, or shoes, or nylons has become a time-consuming exercise in being a contortionist, but also has me wondering on a daily basis if that is going to be the action that causes my water to break.
  • I have to use the restroom all. the. time.  I emphasize all the time, because I don't think you understand what's going on here.  Whenever I change positions, no matter how little time has passed, I have to use the restroom.  I will use the restroom at home, get in the car and drive 1 mile to work, and as soon as I get out of the car and walk into the school, the first thing I will have to do is use the restroom again.
  • The babies appreciate an empty bladder -- they often move around more following my using the restroom... I think they appreciate any extra space they can get.
  • It is very difficult to lean over into a car and reach something -- like when you get out of a car, but then reach back in to grab your purse or bottle of water... yeah, my stomach gets squashed and my back gives out when I do that.
  • You can seem my entire stomach rolling, jiggling, and poking in and out when the twins are moving.  It is the coolest thing and truly one of my favorite parts of carrying twins.
  • While nice soft reclining chairs look comfortable, for me, right now, the more support a chair has, the more comfortable I am.  I will take a boring, hard, sturdy card-table chair over a recliner any day!  Of course, this is the time, when very well-meaning, considerate people are selflessly offering me the very soft, comfortable seats, and I have to graciously refuse in favor of a hard-backed chair.
  • Simply moving is very difficult.  I have always tried to keep in good physical shape and enjoy a variety of exercise routines, and so that fact that simply moving has become incredibly difficult is a very hard fact for me to accept.  There are times when my feet are elevated, but I want to put them on the ground to get up or reposition myself... and it will take me several attempts and careful planning in order to do so
  • I get short-of breath doing just about anything.  Thankfully, my breathing, thus far, always returns to normal when I stop and allow myself to catch my breath, but -- I get short of breath carrying on a conversation, walking, interacting with Tracey Ann, trying to get out of bed, and more.
  • Most of my maternity clothes do not really fit right now.
  • In the morning, when I think about my day, I used to try to have a plan for what I could accomplish with Tracey Ann, and then how I would productively use her naptime to accomplish other projects without her.  Then, after her nap, we might go outside and play together until dinner.  Now, I might have one project I can accomplish in the course of two or three days, with the help of my parents and/or Hubby, and when Tracey Ann is napping, I have to be napping and/or off my feet during that time otherwise, I will not be in a good state to finish the evening with the family.
  • While a shower or bath are still relaxing for me, they also now take twice to three times as long as they ever did, and I'm exhausted at the end.

Again, I do not mean to, IN ANY WAY imply that I am not incredibly grateful for this pregnancy and how well it is going, and how much I am able to still do while carrying the twins, and more... but the truth is, most people have no idea what this feels like... and I know I will blissfully forget many of these things once our two little blessings arrive.  So, for your general education along with my own prosperity sake, please understand the spirit behind this post as informative and not complaining.

Big Shoes

With Grammie and Papa living with us, Tracey Ann is learning that, in our family, she has big shoes to fill... in this case, they're Papa's.
